Autumn in Spitz: a little break on the Tausendeimerberg

An outing with Sabine among golden vineyards, with views of the Danube and a wine break at the fridge in a small stone hut.

Golden vineyards above the Danube

Golden vine leaves, sunshine on the terraces and the Danube below us: our little outing to Spitz took Sabine and me up the Tausendeimerberg. Along the way we took some photos and made time to enjoy the views of the Wachau in autumn.

A wine break at the small stone hut

A small stone hut particularly stayed in our minds. Inside is a fridge with wine to take on a self-service basis. Payment goes into a small cash box. During our visit we found and tried a Gelber Muskateller ‘Terrassen’ from Weingut Gebetsberger. I enjoyed it very much.

A Muskateller with the view

Weingut Gebetsberger in Spitz also lists its Gelber Muskateller ‘Terrassen’ in its own range. The wine’s name is clearly visible in our bottle photo, but the vintage is not.

Falstaff’s tasting of the 2025 vintage provides an indication of its character, mentioning elderflower, peach and citrus notes alongside lively acidity. These are researched descriptions of that vintage, not our own detailed tasting notes for the bottle we drank.

For us it was a lovely outing together, with a short wine break among the terraces. The pictures show how much autumn colour remained in the vineyards around Spitz that day.

A note for your visit

The stone hut is not a staffed inn. Our report describes the self-service arrangement during our visit; we cannot promise that it is continuously stocked or open.

Wine with Martinmas goose: white from the Wachau or red?

Regional recommendations say both white and red wine work with Martinmas goose. Our suggestion when buying in the Wachau: ask about Grüner Veltliner or Riesling. The side dishes, the preparation and the individual wine make the difference.

Wine with mushroom risotto: which Wachau style fits?

A medium-bodied Grüner Veltliner is a useful starting point. Mature Riesling or Neuburger are other possibilities. The way the risotto is prepared and the character of the individual wine matter most.

Wachau terms

Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd, simply explained

Three words appear on a great many Wachau labels. They do not tell you whether a wine is better or worse, but which way its style, its weight and the right moment to drink it are heading.
